Nuwara Eliya

Nicknamed 'Little England' for its cool climate and colonial-era architecture, Nuwara Eliya sits at over 1,800 metres in Sri Lanka's central highlands. Tudor-style bungalows, manicured gardens and surrounding tea estates give it a character unlike anywhere else on the island — most visitors combine it with Ella or Kandy as part of a hill country route.

• Evenings and early mornings get cold — pack a warm layer even in the dry season
• Roads into town can be busy with local holidaymakers around April (Sri Lankan New Year)
• Book ahead for the train from Kandy in peak season
