Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's best-known surf town, built around a long right-hand point break on the island's less-visited east coast. Its season runs opposite to the south and west coasts, making it a good option for travellers visiting outside the usual peak months.

Travel tips

• Outside the May–September season, surf conditions and services are much reduced
• The drive is long — consider breaking the journey overnight
• Board rental and lessons are widely available for beginners at calmer nearby breaks
