Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons

Sri Lanka is affected by two separate monsoons that hit opposite coasts at different times of year, which means there's rarely a single 'worst' time to visit the whole island — just a best time for whichever region you're heading to.

South and west coasts: December to April

The south-west monsoon brings rain to the south and west coasts, and to the hill country, roughly from May to September. The driest, most reliable window for beaches like Mirissa, Galle and Bentota, and for hill country towns like Ella and Nuwara Eliya, runs from December to April.

East coast: May to September

The north-east monsoon affects the opposite side of the island from around October to January. This makes the east coast — Trincomalee and Arugam Bay in particular — best visited from May to September, which conveniently overlaps with the rainier period further south.

Cultural Triangle: mostly dry year-round

Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura sit in Sri Lanka's dry zone and are visitable most of the year, though January to March tends to bring the clearest skies.

Shoulder seasons are worth considering

April and September/October fall between the two monsoon patterns and can offer a reasonable compromise if your dates are fixed and don't line up neatly with either coast's dry season.
